It would be nice if the offline maps binary format was described somewhere.
I see the watch calls binary files ending with smtf extension (though file first bytes shows ‘FMTS’ word) from suunto CDN servers when loading map tiles.With this map format described and maybe a way to configure the map server endpoint in SA or in the watch, we could create or use our own topo maps (like for instance opentopomap).
wow, Suunto map hack! let’s start a separate thread for this
smtf is maybe SuuntoMapTileFormat have no clue though but like the idea !!! -
This isn’t for the on-watch maps, but the background info for the maps in the Suunto App seems to update in near real time with edits to OpenStreetMap. The imagery does not, though.
For instance, I added a new path connected to an existing one a day or two ago and was surprised to see that the app correctly routed to it, turn-by-turn instructions and all. It’ll be interesting to see how long it takes Mapbox to update their imagery to match.
So while we wait for Suunto to update the on-watch maps, we can at least create routes with up-to-date info.

@isazi is there a notification or way to know if the map requires updates?

@kurtpenter
Not atm afair -
@kurtpenter As I got the last Updates for Maps for my SV, I saw this in my list of installed maps in the app… but you have to look at this list, there was no hint like a pop up message or something else
-
How are these updated maps marked in the list?
In my list of maps (Germany & Austria) I cannot see any hint for an update. Maybe there is no existing map update for Germany and Austria in my SA?
-
@Sturgis I think there was written „update available“ in the list, and it was updated during the next charging with connection to my wifi… but the map update was last autumn, october or november I think…

@SuperFlo75 Thank you! Then there is no existing map update for Germany and Austria in my downloaded maps list.
