First run with the Race
-
Good people of Suunto Forum
Wanted to share my first thoughts and ask some questions I couldn’t find clear answers to.The watch is great in both looks and feel. I’ve had the Vertical for the past year (using it barely) and the Race for 3 days now.
Today I went on an easy run and it felt great. I used the Vertical for couple of runs before I received the Race.Question 1: Even though the custom sport I created (running) is in Performance mode the screen goes black when I dont look at it. Is this intended? Does it follow the general setting of disabled AOD (I have AOD to off in general settings)?
Question2: Even though in performance mode and dark cloudy weather in Germany the screen was kinda dim. It is more bright in the menus and in the sport activity start screen (I have general brightness to medium). Is this intended? Does it have ambient light to regulate (if yes I’d expect to be brighter since at some more bright places I could harldy see the numbers (well not as hardly but as if the watch had low display setting on).
If the first question’s anser is that it should not behave like that I suspect that the Performance mode was not really Performance (but I scrolled and checked that there is no custom mode)?
One last observation. Since in the past I was running with FR965 I was still syncing all my activities from Connect to Suunto App. For some reason the VO2Max even after 7 runs was somehow stuck in 46.6 (too low for mine 54+ in the medical test). I attributed this to the fact that maybe the metric was affected by the pas runs with other watch but the Vertical was also showing always the 46.6 (like it is stuck on it). Now with the Race I imidiately got 52.6 wich I believe will only improve since I just got out of bronchitis.
One last question from the previous observation: Is the Vertical still using FB algorithms and the Race Suunto’s so this will also explain the much higher step count on the vertical compared to the Race? I feel the Race is much more close (undercounting little) than the Vertical that overcounts by big amount. Both of the watches are on the same latest FW (.14)
Cheers and kudos to Suunto for the crown on the Race: it makes a watch with 3 buttons act like 5. Great, great!
Have a nice day all and thanks for the insights.

@EzioAuditore You need to enable always on in the control panel before the workout. The screen is dimmed, if you don’t look at it. I am not sure about the light sensor. I don’t think the screen gets brighter in sunshine.

Again me after having lots of fun and runs with the Race that I absolute love. Some caveats though or feedback will be much appriciated since I might be missing somethig. I have the brightness in settings to Medium. This is quite good in and outdoors when on the watch face and on the menus. The minor problem I am facing is while in activity. I have the feeling that the Max brightness is somehow set to Low in the activity even though I use Performance mode. Keep in mind I have AOD off both in control and general settings so the screen is black when not looking at it. But when I raise to check the max brightness is somehow too low… barely visible when there is a bit more light (either sun or ‘white’ clouds). And while I am mostly training with the Vertical on sunny days I still would like to know if there is something I am missing here. For example the AWU2 and FR965 are much much brighter (both set to auto I think I never bothered cheking ) Thank you!
