Hi I have the Suunto 9 peak watch and when i swim there are a few problems.
it wont measure when i only swim with legs, so arms are held in front of me and not moving? Why is this? all the other strokes it seems to be fine? So it is not giving me accurate distance due to the fact that it stops recording when i swim legs only?

@TaraJones Every Suunto watches only record distance (in pool swim) if you move your arms, you can’t record any distance using only your legs. Many users (me included) asking for this feature since years, for this reason i always use Garmin watches for pool swim so i can use drill and set distance once i have finishes leg exercises.

@TaraJones @renton82 Not every Suunto watch though, Suunto Ambit 3 was the last Suunto to include not only drill mode, but also you could turn on teach mode to have the watch learn your own personal swim technique for each of the major 4 strokes.

To this day, that’s the only reason I swim in the pool with the Ambit 3 when doing drills.

If i’m doing either swim pool with no drills, or openwater, my Suunto Vertical does a great job.

if you do a proper turn at the end of your lane it should detect it and count the preset pool length.
if you do a leg only lane and you do not move your arms… how should the watch detect you are swimming?

@freeheeler I can answer that, it’s called drill mode, once you enable it, you get another screen where every time you reach the end of pool, you manually press a button to add 25 meters and so forth.

Once you’re done with legs only or any other type of technique specific swim where hands don’t move at all, you disable it, you’re back to your normal swim screen. The distance swam under this mode gets appended to your total distance of that swim session.

This feature has been missing pretty much since the S line of Suunto watches. However it’s a core feature of any swim training, most pool swimmers won’t skip this, only the Suunto watches do 😉
