Just a quick question, how do you know that the Galaxy was correct and Suunto incorrect? Thanks for asking me. Galaxy watch give me almost the same results as Huawei GT2 Pro and gamin fenix 6x Pro.

That is super weird as the F6xP uses the pretty much the same sleep tracking as the S7. F6 had a recent update depending on what firmware you are on, so maybe that is the difference, as not sure the S7 has had that update. -
@stylianos-kalintzis I’ve compared my S7 to various Withings devices, previous WearOS devices, Garmin, and Fitbit.
For me, The S7 is right up there with the Fitbit and the Withings. They all have their quirks and every device I’ve used has the odd night where it just gets things way off. But on the whole, the S7 for me has been incredibly consistent and outperforms the Withings most days.
The only thing missing from the S7 (for me) is the ability to correct the data when it is obvious it has got things wrong.
But I’m guessing the sleep tracking accuracy could vary from person to person? In the same way optical HR data varies from person to person?
(My gf has a garmin and compared to the Fitbit she had previously she says the sleep tracking is trash! so nothing is perfect for everyone)

“(My gf has a garmin and compared to the Fitbit she had previously she says the sleep tracking is trash! so nothing is perfect for everyone)”Depends on the Garmin she had, its only the FR745/945, F6 line and Venu2 that currently have the firstbeat sleep tracking. Not sure why it hasn’t been rolled out to the rest… or if it ever will be. I suspect that same may never be able to handle it as its all watch based unlike most sleep trackers which are server based.

That would make a bit of sense then, as she has the Venu (version 1).
I still take all sleep tracking with a pinch of salt however.
For me, as long as it is consistent and can tell me if i am getting better or worse then my average that is enough for me and is enough for me to look at what has changed.
(I will admit the S7 is very good at picking up changes to my routine, it records a bad sleep if i eat a big meal too late, or when i’ve had alcohol). For the most part my S7 is consistent, with only the occasional day where it has gotten confused and recorded the wrong start/stop sleep time (I really wish we had the opportunity to edit this!!!)
The Garmin Venu seems much less consistent. -
I honestly not had the sleep tracking in mind before, until I started to give importance to it with the S7. It helped me a lot to organize myself better and give importance to this very important stage of the day and after training. I always press “I’m awake” to confirm that I was awake. But I noticed that a few times that I forgotten the S7 took only that resolution, is it possible?
I looked it up in the manual and found no information about it.Also a few days ago I had to go out for almost 2 hours at 3AM, I went back to bed at 5AM and slept until 7. It surprised me because those almost 2 hours that I was driving my vehicle, walking, etc., it did not cancel my sleep monitoring and took it as “awake” time that night. In itself, what surprises me is that I am almost certain that there were days where it automatically took as being up, since I never confirmed with the “I’m Awake” option.
But it really seems very precise to me, or for my use, always in relation to what I feel about how I passed that night even though I have the Karma that when I get up it tells me: “You didn’t sleep very well” hahaha
And yes @olymay, a tool to can edit our data always would be perfect.

@flypg I’ve had a keen interest in my sleep for years, in fact it weas the main reason I got a fitness tracker 8-9 years ago.
I know sleep is super important but whilst I am much better than I was, I still don’t get enough good quality sleep.
With the S7 I usually press the “I’m Awake” button, but that’s mostly because I need to take the watch out of Cinema Mode so I do both at the same time. There is the odd day when I forget to do this and the sleep tracking almost always get my wake up time spot on, it’s pretty impressive.
It does frustrate me that it can’t detect multiple sleeps in a day. I only sleep once a day, but there are times when I’ll have a nap and it will not record it.
This is something I am hoping will get tweaked in the next generation S7 (along with the ability to edit incorrect sleep data).

@olymay this confirm me that I not need to press the “I’m Awake”, the S7 also doing this in itself? I can’t found a confirmation of this on the manual.
Naps are not good to me. I feel very bad after naps, perhaps because my Mom forced us to take naps when I was kid jajaja. Maybe a way to add manually the naps can help you a lot or a option to add a potential nap window to be detected by the sleep tracking.
PS- I’m always at when I going to the bed put: Airplane Mode + Theater Mode + Do Not Disturb. This last maybe not have sense because is in Airplane Mode, but it’s my nightly routine.
-
@flypg i’ll stop pressing the button manually for a few days and see how the auto detect compares. But I think it’s pretty good.
I don’t take/need many naps these days as I try to get better sleep at night. But there are some weekends when I have a late night (may or not be a few drinks involved) and a nap the following day will be needed.
I have developed an internal timer for almost perfect power naps for me. This likely comes from operating a 4 hours on 4 hours off pattern when sailing long distances. With other jobs to do I usually have a two hour sleeping window every 8 hours, so my body has become good at making the most of this. I can nap anywhere from 10 mins to 2 hours and wake up feeling great.
However, I never wear a fitness tracker on the boats (my plastic fantastic Casio is my go to for sailing) so I have never been able to see if any devices could track this pattern. -
@flypg
Garmin Venu 2/ Fenix 6 / FR745/945 use the same sleep tracking from firstbeat - and we do not have a end sleep tracking option like the S7. I have noticed it generally does a good job, however if lying in bed awake it doesn’t always pick up you have finished your sleep, which is where I think that option comes in useful.
Though I have noticed that going into the watch’s sleep tracking does seem to also trigger the end of sleep tracking - and as I am usually pretty interested to see my metrics its become a habit to check each morning before getting out of bed (it at least gives me a heads up if I have an issue from that night). -
@jamie-bg I don’t know how works in deep on the S7, mainly becuase in the manual not say anything about automatic end sleep time, but works almost perfect. Today I made a test of not confirm that I’m awake neither entry to the Sleep Tracking screen. I awake at 6:28 but stay on the bed until 6:33. During this time I checked the time, turned off the DND and Theater mode, after these I started my day. Close to 30 minutes later I feel the vibration of the Sleep Tracking alert and was amazing becase telled me that I waked up at 6:29.
Like you say, the confirmation to finish the sleep is very useful, but I really don’t know when is activated this confirmation or what trigger this (sleep time hours? Possible end of sleep window based on the sleep time goal?). The other day, at 3AM, I did not have this confirmation to cancel my sleep time but 7AM yes.
-
@flypg I think it runs off your set sleep times to a degree. As if you wake prior to the end time, but then fall asleep after the end time, it will generally not record that sleep - it will instead give your resources a boost i.e. count it as a nap.
The Garmins have had a recent update which included a host of firstbeat algorithm updates and it sounds like some reckon they are now seeing naps included into sleep (I hope that isn’t true and or is more a function of how they set their sleep times). #
Personally I do not want naps included as sleep and do not think they should be, as they will often not properly include deep sleep and I like to track my estimated deep sleep to total sleep duration percentage (essential for my general well being and to control my chronic fatigue issues).
