Manual lap requires two button presses in 2.18.18?

I just updated an S5 to 2.18.18 from 2.14.14 ( skipped 2.16.28 ) and went for a run using the custom battery mode with screen turned off after 10 seconds.
Was very surprised to discover that this update now requires two button presses to store a manual lap instance. I’m very accustomed to stopping ( or pausing ) the training with two button presses ( the first brings the screen up, the second invokes the action ), but manual laps have previously been a single press.
By design or a change that comes with the new screen modes?
