hrTSS on watch vs Training Peaks
-
Hi there, coming from a Garmin 245 to the Suunto Peak.
I enabled the SuuntoPlus option for the TrainingPeaks hrTSS for my run today. The watch computed the value but it is a a third of that reported by TrainingPeaks.
The weight, max HR, resting HR and heart rate zones are identical on the watch and TrainingPeaks.
Has anyone else tried this feature and any tips on what I may be missing? Not a big deal as I can always look it up on TP, but a bit disconcerting for the watch to be off by that much in its calculations.
Thanks.

@murthy-simhambhatla If your activity is a run then won’t TrainingPeaks be calculating rTSS by default rather than hrTSS? In other words, are you sure you’re comparing apples to apples?
-
@murthy-simhambhatla You aren’t imagining things. The TSS reported by S+ field/app is indeed consistently lower than what TP would report for the same activity. I have exact same problem. Didn’t get around to look into it more. I simply update my activities in the app with data out of TP.

@bnorthrop For some reason, it doesn’t do TSS or rTSS for me either quite often, and regardless of exact flavor of TSS it is always lower than in TP. It has been the case with S9B, and it’s now the case with S9P.
In fact, on Garmin side I use hrTSS CIQ data field by third party dev that matches TP value exactly across all activity types. All it needs is my LT threshold, so there’s no secret sauce and a correct calculation is definitely possible.

The tss for rtss or hrtss will be selectable in future updates soon.
Right now this is the order of preference depending on the sensors.
ptss
hrTSS
rTss
Metstss -
@bnorthrop the watch reports hrTSSS (I selected TP HR in SuuntoPlus), but regardless even the rTSS value in TP is twice the value reported by the watch.
This calls into question any other metrics the watch reports, such as calories (much, much higher than Garmin or Apple Watch when compared for the same activity) or PTE, EPOC etc, which I have no way of validating against anything else.

@murthy-simhambhatla for rtss your TP account needs to have the correct zones set.
Set zone 4 upper limit for pace to the threshold pace on TP.
Our metrics are just fine. The note is that only for tss there will always be small differences between TP and Suunto app. That is because the TSS calculation varies a little for low threshold pace hr etc.

@dimitrios-kanellopoulos, I matched the power and pace zones on the watch / TP, and the TSS score on the watch matched that on TP for this morning’s run.
Thanks for your helpful suggestion.

@murthy-simhambhatla at least for me Garmin and Suunto deliver quite similar metrics (considering Kcal, etc.) (data shown by RunGap app)
Walk with Suunto:
Walk with Garmin (same route, almost similar time and distance)

@murthy-simhambhatla same for me. SA calculations are always lower than TP…

@chrisa , - thanks, that’s good to know. I need to check if I matched the settings correctly on my Garmin and Suunto.
