Suunto 7 not syncing steps and heart rate to google fit outside of runs/activities
-
I sync sleep data since half a year from the Skagen Falster 3 to Google Fit. The delay is not longer than 10 minutes until the sleep data are shown in Google Fit. And all sleep data are available without any day missing.
-
Last night I tried the sleep tracking of the Suunto 7.
My experiences:- Battery usage for 8,5 hours: 35 % (airplane mode, display off, no tilt to wake)
- Detection of sleepwalking is perfect, the watch gave me a popup with the question: Are you awake or do you sleep?. After recognizing that there were steps recorded.
- Sync to Google Fit happened within 5 minutes.
- Only few data are shown in Google Fit. No sleep phases, no heart rate, no qualitiy of the sleep. Screenshot attached and to have a comparison another one of the sleep tracking of another WearOS watch and another day.
I know, that sleep tracking on all watches out there is just an option to have fun. So no problem, just my experiences.

Didn’t know it does this . Maybe I’ve not seen it as I use cinema mode.

Official information about the conection to Google Fit and the synced data:
“If you use Google Fit to track your daily activities and want to see how your exercises, daily activity and sleep recorded with Suunto Wear app impact your daily activity goals, connect Suunto Wear app with Google Fit. When connected, training insights from exercises recorded with Suunto Wear app will also be accessible in Google Fit.”
It’s not clear, what the difference is between exercises which are synced (sentence 1) and exercises recorded with Suunto Wear app which are synced (sentence 2).
And daily activities are what?
Is there a sync from Google Fit to Suunto Wear app too?
-
If you go to the screen where you connect to Google Fit in the Suunto app on the S7, there is actually a pretty decent description of what it syncs. Although I’m not sure how easy the same info is to find if you’ve already connected.
For one thing, in my opinion, this makes it pretty clear that 24/7 HR is not one of the things we should expect to see synced.

@pilleus
What settings do you have on your watch for the google fit app?Prior sleep periods I always got sleep graph, however from last nights I haven’t and yesterday I switched off all the sensors for google fit, so am wondering if that is the difference, or if its merely server issues on Google side (not unusual).

@aleksander-h step counts do not sync or are merged with Google Fit steps. Google Fit cannot be stopped to count steps, even if it is disabled and not configured. I tested it twice.

My Google Fit app on the Suunto 7 is not configured, all permissions are disabled in WearOS system settings - apps and Google Fit is disabled for the current user via adb.
Nevertheless Google Fit is counting steps and recognizing activities with the Suunto 7 and the data are available in the Google Fit app on the smartphone.
I checked it twice. I deactivated the complete Suunto system (salmon apps, asoy apps and suunto apps) via adb so that Suunto Wear app cannot use any sensor of the Suunto 7.
Steps and activities are available in Google Fit app on the phone and definitely coming from the Suunto 7 Google Fit app.
And Suunto says in the screenshots above, that sleep data are synced with start and end time only!?

Mine stopped . After I logged out of google fit on my watch, it stopped syncing steps to Google Fit on my phone. I verified this over 2 days before uninstalling Google Fit from my phone as well.

@pilleus did you check in Google fit settings (on phone app) for “managed connected apps”? You can see what apps are connected and providing data to Google fit. If there are no connected apps and you turned off track physical activity on both watch and phone app Google fit settings then you will get no steps. The steps you are seeing in Google fit are not coming from suunto unless it’s during activities AND suunto is listed under connected apps.
-
I will set the S7 now to factory settings to be sure. It’s weird …
-
Okay, everything is clear now.
Did a factory reset on the Suunto 7 and did not configure Google Fit.
I connected Suunto Wear app with Google Fit.
Steps and activities (Suunto 7 is detecting activities without starting the Suunto Wear app) are synced to Google Fit from Suunto (server or phone app, not clear). As described in the manual and the screens on the Suunto 7.
A screenshot attached, where are 3 activities listed. The first and third one are from Suunto 7, the second one a short walk from the Casio GBX-100.
-
@pilleus but did you check in Google fit settings on your phone app to see which apps are connected to it?

It’s not important, because any connected app must collect data to sync it to Google Fit. And on my S7 are Google Fit (disabled) and Suunto Wear app. Nothing else.
And if there is Casio and Strava and Komoot connected doesn’t matter.
And another connected smartwatch on the sideboard or the smartphone on the table do not collect data during a walk or run.
The data are definitely from the Suunto 7.

I connected Suunto Wear app with Google Fit.I thought connecting to Google Fit in the Suunto app also activated Google Fit on said watch?

No. Suunto syncs the data not to the Google Fit wear app but to Google’s server. The result is visible in Google Fit phone app and every WearOS smartwatch with activated Google Fit.
In my app launcher on the Suunto 7 there is not one Google Fit option listed. And I cannot choose one of Google Fit complications on the watchface of the Suunto 7, because Google Fit on the Suunto 7 is disabled (by adb).
But Suunto wear app is connected to Google Fit and the sync is okay.
-
@pilleus the Google fit app does not need to be activated on the watch for it to sync data. Like the other person said, it’s a server sync. The app just displays the server info. You need to check which apps are connected to Google fit in the Google fit app settings on your phone to see where it gets info from.

My words. Read my post again. Google Fit on the Suunto 7 is deactivated and cannot collect or sync data.
Google Fit on my phone is deactivated to collect data and has no acces to location service. It’s showing only the data from the Google server.
And the allowed connections on my Google Fit phone app or Google account do not affect the data coming from the Suunto 7 Wear app.
If I use the Suunto 7, only this watch can collect data. Not my Skagen Falster 3 nor my Casio nor any other app on my phone. All these devices are at home and no data is available to sync.
Therefore all the data in Google Fit are from the Suunto 7.
-
@pilleus but it’s only syncing data from recorded activities, correct? So if you went for a walk with your watch on, but did not officially track the activity with the suunto app. You may get 500 steps but those steps would not sync with Google fit.

Your S7 used 35% battery in tracking 8h30m sleep?? That really doesn’t right to me, as mine is using roughly 9% to track 7h30m sleep.
I have aeroplane mode off but I do put it into Cinema mode. And have you gone back yet to look at the sleep data? Mine syncs the initial data across very quickly, but the full detail of sleep phases and graph takes a while to appear (maybe this is because this graph is not shown in Suunto App, so Google Fit has to generate it itself, thus it takes a little bit of time to do so?)
My sleep tracking with the S7 was absolutely spot on and was in fact better than my Withings Sleep Analyser on this occasion. The fell asleep time was 4m apart and what I would expect to see. The wake up time was accurate on the S7 (because of the notification asking if I am awake I guess?) but because I didn’t get immediately, the Withings was about 20 minutes late.
