notification access not working

Generally I’m quite happy with my Suunto 5. One function I just haven’t managed to get to work is the notifications on the watch face. It isn’t a really high priority (I would have been perfectly happy if not happier if everything would have remained computer/web based) but well, as the option is here now… When I click “allow” in the Suunto phone software I’m being directed to the settings of Android but all it says is “This feature is not available on this device.” Everything else seems to work just fine. I’ve given Suunto all permissions it could have, disabled battery optimization for the app, did the settings right in the phone etc.
I actually got an Android phone (Nokia 1.3) because I need it for my watch, otherwise I’m perfectly happy with a basic cellphone. So I haven’t logged into the Google services and have sideloaded the Suunto app. Could that be the issue? Or is it just that this phone is one of the lower end devices and doesn’t have the capacity to offer this service? Either way, if getting this to work demands a new/different phone or if it requires logging into Google, I’ll let it pass and will happily enjoy my watch without the notification function. But if it is just a simple setting I have to change I’m eager to learn about it. Thanks in advance!

Getting fed up of having to scroll through the same posts each visit?
