Suunto app and battery life on Suunto Spartan

I (briefly) used the suunto app with my Suunto Spartan. The battery would drain very quickly during activities. Typically the watch would warn about battery life after about 1.25 hours and I had the watch die (from full charge) on a couple of activities http://www.movescount.com/moves/move358836401 and http://www.movescount.com/moves/move358875768. This was using a custom sport mode. For the 2nd activity, I had airplane mode under connectivity settings & battery saving under general settings and enabled it didn’t affect battery life at all. Incidentally, I noticed that the watch would still sync activities to suunto app when airplane mode was on, thus it appears in addition to abysmal battery life, the airplane mode setting is not being adhered to.
I did a factory reset per https://www.suunto.com/Support/faq-articles/lifecycle/how-to-reset-your-suunto-watch/ and battery usage is back to normal, so I’m highly confident it’s an issue related to suunto app and pairing.
