Suunto 5 (battery) questions
-
Hello,
I am planning to buy an suunto 5 (maybe 9). I now have a ambit 3 sport.
I will us it for cycling, running and walking. But I have a few questions:
-
Price of 5 is now 250 euro, 9 is 299 euro. Which is the best buy? I will use adaptive training I think.
-
I also want sleep tracking and steps counting and activity tracking. I’ve heard that if 24/7 heart rate monitoring is on, the battery wil drown very quickly. About 3% / hour, according to DC rainmaker (and the first software). This means every 3 days charging. Is this still the case?
-
Suunto 9 also has activity tracking now, doesn’t it? It’s new? If yes, what is the difference then?
-
Anyway to lock the touchscreen during sleep on 9? On Garmin vivoactive4 there was no way, so during the night it lit up…
-
Is it worth the upgrade from Ambit 3 sport to 5 or 9?
Txs!!

@kproost
i will let experts for all other topics, but consider as well that you won’t have any baro watch in this list.
Neither with your current A3S, but if you consider to have “reliable” ascent values, don’t forget it after buying S5 or S9 (non baro). -
I went from an Ambit 3 Peak to the Suunto 9 Baro. Main personal reasons: Vibration, looks, replaceable straps and batterylife.
Hopefuly some answers to your question

Best buy depends on personal preferences. Maybe a comparison on the Suunto website can help you make the descision.

I don’t use the 24/7 tracking anymore, but I have never noticed a 3%/hr drop when i did. Now I charge my S9 about once in every two weeksSuunto 9 also has activity tracking now, doesn’t it? It’s new? If yes, what is the difference then?
What do you mean by Activity Tracking? Steps, calories, sleep etc or do you mean recording an excercise? Both of the options have been in the watch from the beginnen as far as I know.Anyway to lock the touchscreen during sleep on 9? On Garmin vivoactive4 there was no way, so during the night it lit up…
The Suunto 9 screen touch screen locks after 1 minute in watch mode and activates after a press of a button. In excercise mode you can lock it manually instant. Is it worth the upgrade from Ambit 3 sport to 5 or 9?
For me it was. Although I am missing some options on my S9 that were possible on my Ambit3 I also got some new feature in the S9 and in the mean time I learned to coop and workaround the missing features from the Ambit3 -
Txs for the input.
I will do a comparison on the suunto website.- I won’t need a baro.
- Replacable straps are nice on a 9. I’ve had many replacements on my ambit.
Think I will look in a store to get my hands on the both. Meanwhile all input is welcome. Especially battery life with 24/7 HR

Hi
Here 24/7 HR and sleep tracking, notifications—> 6 days duration.
I changed automatic light to manual, because it went on in every notification received, -
@kproost The 9 and the 5 are very similar with just a few differences.
-
The 5 has a smaller screen
-
The 9 has a compass and the 5 does not, during navigation the 9 can give enhanced directional information when moving slowly or standing still
-
The 9b has a barometer, the 9 and the 5 do not. The 9baro can provide storm alerts, show barometric pressure and provide altitude information at all GPS sampling frequencies. The 9 and the 5 will ONLY provide real-time altitude information on BEST GPS sampling.
-
The 9 and 9baro have a compass and will provide excellent GPS tracks when either Endurance Mode or Ultra Mode are selected providing ~50h and ~120h of GPS tracking.
-
The 9 and 9baro have a touchscreen that is larger than the 5.
-
On best GPS fix the 5 battery life is 25h, the 9 and 9baro are ~30h
-
All else is similar including activity tracking, sleep tracking, etc.

@Brad_Olwin The 5 also has an external GPS antenna does it not, the same bump as the Ambits & Spartan Trainer?
-
@The_77 Correct, my testing shows similar GPS tracks for both watches but I would expect under more challenging conditions the 5 could be better. The external antenna may not be comfortable on smaller wrists.
-
@Brad_Olwin Yeah getting the “correct” position on the wrist for good oHR is sometimes interesting on the Trainer.
The most obvious thing is the lack of Baro, the Trainer (and by extension 5) obviously struggles to get good altimeter data on rolling terrain, though that has been covered a lot in here.
-
@The_77 The 9 and the 5 are poor for me for OHR but the 7 is amazing. I suspect future hardware from Suunto will be much better for OHR. Although the 5 is less bulky, for me the OHR on 5 and 9 are equivalently poor.
