Suunto 7 for IPhone
-
Quick update- the weather has adjusted. Strange. I didn’t change any permissions or settings but it’s updated now.
Assuming the watch is operating correctly, should I be seeing real live data on my watch without any push or force updates from the phone?
-
@Sarah-Gribble Weather for tile comes via Google Assistant, and any changes there may take hours to push through. For example, if you change from F to C for your temps, the change won’t stick immediately. There’s a great deal of latency involved as things have to sync to Google Assistant cloud and around.
For weather, I recommend AccuWeather and their complication. The app hasn’t changed in years, sadly, and it doesn’t update consistently either, but at least it updates and it gets the memo when locations change.

You should. But there are two hurdles. The latency in Google Assistant provided weather (see my post above) and Wear OS app on iPhone which is known to have a mind of its own.
-
@NickK I have not had much luck with AccuWeather. Without the app on iOS it is even worse. I do not recommend it at all.
-
@Sarah-Gribble If you want more weather detail, I have found this watch face does a good job. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.sooon.weatherblack

@Brad_Olwin I like this! Cool face. Thanks for the information. I’m doing all I can to make this my apple watch . For my fitness and tracking the apple watch was perfect with integration into my phone and daily life; just did not like the aesthetics at all. Any other tips/tricks that you’ve found to help mirror that functionality are greatly appreciated as I don’t have any specific questions necessarily at this time.

Presently Wear OS device can’t quite compete with Apple Watch even when paired to Android, let alone iPhone. Sure, there are some bright spots where it shines, but when it comes to a complete package… Sadly you will have to accept compromises for the time being.
That being said, the aesthetics is there for S7 as is the sports tracking and hardware. Hopefully, things get better. But it’s up to Google to start taking wearables seriously. There’s only so much Suunto can do building on a shaky foundation.
-
@NickK Yep- I’ve realized this. I think so far it’s worth the compromise but still working through it. I’m also testing and considering the Fenix 6 Pro which I know is a whole different breed.

@Sarah-Gribble I have F6X in my stable, and what it does it does extremely well. Be it sports tracking, activity tracking, music, battery life, waterproofing, various Firstbeat analytics, connectivity, structured workouts and TP integration. That being said, F6X is in the drawer and S7’s in on my wrist:
- Garmin devices, even with the latest ConnectIQ, remain sports watches with some smartwatch features, but it’s a long-long way to Wear OS based smartwatch
- There’s something to be said about weight and bulk: S7 has the same 1.4" screen, yet it is significantly lighter and somewhat thinner and sits better on your arm
- Speaking of screens… You just can’t compare them – brightness, resolution, color
- Touch controls
- I’d take Suunto’s design over Garmin any day and it seems to be more robust scratches-wise too
- Garmin Pay is no comparison to Google Pay in terms of coverage
- Apps, from task management to Google Keep to Outlook emails – you won’t get any of that on Garmin
- Offline maps from Suunto are for anywhere in the world, updated automatically; for Garmin it’s a region you bought it in. Sure, you can download and side-load other maps, but it’s jumping through quite a few hoops
-
@NickK I think many of your points are spot-on. I like many of the sport features and love the capability but just determining how much of it I’ll actually use vs. the idea of using it
-
Another fun question: can you modify or edit the data you see on the far left screen that usually starts with ‘Good afternoon’ and the weather below? There’s quotes and such. Curious if I can prescribe what I’d like to see there.
-
@Sarah-Gribble Not sure. I’d check Google Assistant settings in Wear OS app. Presumably that screen should be all Google’s magic, with context based information you need here and now.
In practice, it’s mostly just a stale weather forecast and a quote.

When I download new watch faces, what prompts them to install on the watch? I’ve installed watch via phone and computer (both signed in with gmail and recognizing the watch) but nothing is showing up on wear OS app or on watch. Sorry if I’m missing something obvious, still adjusting to this new world.
-
@Sarah-Gribble I think you can apply the watch face either in Wear OS app, or directly on the watch. Long press on your current watch face, then pick a newly selected one from the list. There will be a gear icon at the bottom: tap that to configure your watch face.

Hello,
Guys are you able to reply on SMS from watch? Which app r you using? -
-
@pilleus thank you. Should I change something in settings? I cannot see SMS in app and also cannot reply
-
@Daniel-Osojca sorry, I think I didn’t recognise that you are using an iPhone. I have an Android phone. Sorry!
Or the difference is the payed version vs the free version?
Your phone number is added as account?
-
@Daniel-Osojca You can’t reply to SMS messages on iPhone as this feature is restricted by iOS. Only Apple Watch can do that.
While we are at it: you can’t get full messages either (they will be truncated based on notification text limits), can’t execute custom notification actions like deleting an email or marking a task as complete, and can’t install any legacy Wear apps that came as companions to the phone counterparts… These still exist, yeah!
There’s a number of other limitations too, sadly none due to Google and all because of the functionality Apple in their infinite wisdom decided to lock down.
