I have been doing some informal surveys of the many remaining Suunto users I know, and have come to the realization that deprecating Movescount is going to infuriate people as they find that their watches have become paperweights.

The current implementation of the Suunto App requires the use of an iOS or Android mobile device, and for all intents and purposes requires a dedicated device. Movescount allows an unlimited number of individuals to use a single Mac or Windows computer and still sync their moves, configure their watches, etc. Even some of my own relatives (especially kids) don’t have a mobile device with which to sync a watch.

Why can Suunto not take the high road here, and freeze Movescount development while leaving it a viable platform for the next few years? I found that many users are still unaware that Movescount is going to be taken offline, and was stunned at how upset people are that Suunto is purposely crippling their watches or making them completely unusable.

I have yet to see any justification from Suunto on why Movescount is being discontinued. Suunto will take a huge reputational hit with this move and bleed even more customers as they flee in search of a platform that provides some security.

I ask here, Suunto: re-think your decision. Continue to operate Movescount for legacy devices and don’t burn your bridges. The thousands of Ambit users out there are future consumers that you can retain if you use some wisdom in your decision-making.
