Suunto Nautic S General Discussion
-
@Brad_Olwin You are right! Now thats weird, an Ocean with reduced functionality for a reduced price. The hardware seems to be the same, and it has maps and tracking. But only in the water?
I didn’t expect that… -
@VoiGAS Looks like a very nice dive watch. I am sure there is a market for it. I used to be a dive master long ago. If I still lived near an ocean I would be diving……Now I would have a tough choice, one watch for all or a sport watch and diving watch.
-
Has anyone of the testers actually wore the new strap?
-
@Brad_Olwin Hm, yes - could be a good option to have a light watch for running and this one for diving - for combined only 100€ more
Edit: but I think then I want this one: https://www.suunto.com/de-at/Produkte/Tauchcomputer-und-Instrumente/suunto-nautic/suunto-nautic-bungee-cord/

@Brad_Olwin Yeah, the watch band looks great in the pictures, but it’s basically G Ultrafit v2 design, which is not great, although improvement over v1.
Remains to be seen how pliable/soft the material is, but generally, these bands look this great only in promo pics. In practice, the strap’s U-turns around spring bars have much larger diameter than depicted, unless tightened way too much. And with this design, you basically get a section of 3 layers of strap material, depending on strap length and wrist circumference. The outer end with Suunto logo is a nice touch, but instead if the velcroed inner end, the designers should have implemented a fixed end point with integrated spring bar (e.g. Coros) where you get one, or max two layers on overlapping section of the band. -
@Squirrel the point of Nautic S band design is it can be worn both normally and over jacket/dive suit. Great for winter activities.
Shorter velcro strap available as Suunto Run strap

And those buttons for my vertical 2

@VoiGAS based on comparison on suunto uk website this watch has much less features than ocean.

-
Will this watch “replace” the D5?
-
Really nice design, I like it a lot
-
@Tomas5
What do you mean, much less features?It is lighter by 18g and has diving depth +20m. and 50% cheaper, same size and dimensions.
All it lacks is mobile notifications, media controls and physical heart rate / oxygen sensors and maybe some GPS special features.And I think some of the features are not listed correctly, might be even closer. But basically, missing 24/7 monitoring and sports apps directly from wrist, but could utilize HR bands and other external sensors.
If I had to choose, between them now, I would really think twice before getting Ocean (fitness tracking is a bit gimicky, only nice to have feature).
-
@prakalejas well by official suunto uk comparison tool, lot of features are missing, activity tracking, sleep tracking, only dive modes instead of 95+ sport modes, no OHR and blood oxygen, no sleep tracking. Altimeter features seems missing. But maybe is just suunto comparison tool broken?
And by reading product page it looks like this are nice dive watch, but ocean looks like dive + sport watch in one, or am i mistaken? Anyway i am not diver so i was just curiouse about product but i am no target group.
-
@Tomas5 On the technical drawing it looks like it has OHR… this watch is a mystery. Really looking forward to the first reviews
-
@Tomas5 correct
Ocean = Dive + Sports
Nautic S = Dive Only -
Does this completely kill sales and development of the D5?
When my Ocean died I went back to 9PP and D5. I’d forgotten how good the 9PP really is but the d5 felt awful to use.
I can’t see any scenario where a D5 competes with this new model.
-
the nylon strap looks great but is a strange choice for a dive watch. i love my garmin ultrafit but i hate getting it wet because it takes ages to dry, and feels uncomfortable if you wear it beforehand.
that said, suunto list it is a ‘textile’ strap rather then nylon so maybe they’ve solved this problem, somehow.
-
@pavel.samokha …and the cheaper Nautic S supports sidemount…which stuffs those of us who already bought an Ocean…and your silence suggests that how it will stay.
-
@GS-111 you really need to read what I wrote above
-
The ‘hope’ for ‘eventually’ and ‘mostly’ is very vague and not an official statement for suunto (although I hope that it will be the case as you probably internal information)
But - judging from the super slow and neglected ocean release cycle (compared to vertical for example)
Im not really optimistic in terms of timelineMy expectation as a customer would be that those features would be available on Ocean as soon as the Nautic S is officialy released and sold (as it means that those parts in the software are already implemented and tested)
-
Does anyone know something about the customizable displays of the Nautic S ? This is exactly what I’m waiting for on the Ocean.
