S9PP Elevation changing when sitting still
-
I have a S9PP, and I am constantly having to adjust my altitude, even when sitting at my desk.
I do a mixture of sailing and trail running, so knowing reliable barometer & altitude data is an important safety factor.
On my old watch (Ambit peak 3), you could select a profile to use with the activity, locking either the barometer or altitude.
Can Suunto bring this back please?
-
@Oxhill_Runner I also liked this option in older watches
-
@Oxhill_Runner This is handled automatically now so unlikely that a manual feature will return. You may have a clogged sensor or a faulty sensor, I would attempt cleaning. I rarely ever adjust altitude and when I do, I use Auto adjust in the Alti/Baro settings so a strong GPS fix is enabled.

@Brad_Olwin Automatics unfortunately sometimes or often (depending on circumstances) fail. In my case, every few days it deviates significantly, currently: -99m, which is very incorrect and has to be manually corrected every few days.
I live in a very stormy place with significant pressure changes. -
@maszop I also live in a place with dramatic pressure and weather changes situated between mountains at 4000-4300m within 25km and plains to the east at an altitude of 1600m. We have dramatic and rapid weather changes (with obvious changes in pressure and high winds). I do not expect my altitude to be āperfectā and there is a 200m elevation change between work and home. My watches (includes 9PP, Vertical, Race and Race S) are typically very close (within 25m or so) to the correct altitude. When exercising outdoors FusedAlti works and altitudes are spot on. If way off I perform an auto adjust as described in the manual. I do not manually adjust as my altitude and that of the sensors at airports differ due to location and micro climate differences.
-
@Brad_Olwin It works ok, if there is some activity, then the FusedAlti automation corrects it.
However, when there is no activity for a few days, another automation (responsible for selecting the barometer/altimeter work) fails.
These are two different tools. -
@Oxhill_Runner
I am having the same issue.
I just sent my watch back to the Suunto repair center.see this other thread
https://forum.suunto.com/topic/11809/problema-altimeter/4 -
My elevation data looks very similar to your watch, and I havenāt left the house all day. -65m nowā¦
Iāll start using Fused Alti more but it takes 10-15 mins, needs to be outside and uses a lot of battery to do so
Iāll look for some articles on cleaning the sensor too
-
@Oxhill_Runner
Maybe search also for the āfridge testā
Baro sensor is correlating absolute
pressure and internal temperature to display altitude. A āquickā temperature change must not change the altitude (assuming pressure is not changing during this quick test). -

@Oxhill_Runner same behaviour as mine. Contact the support and they will ask you to send it back for repair.
How old is your watch ? -
@Oxhill_Runner That is likely a hardware issue.
-
Thanks everyone for the feedback.
Iāll contact Support and see about getting it fixed. I bought the watch in October 2022 -
@Oxhill_Runner mine is from Nov. 2022.

@flo7z
Suunto got back and have said to send it in for repair. Its ā¬42 for a Simple Analysis & return freight & then theres the Cost Estimate to repair the watch, plus probably a month without the watch?..Im thinking of upgrading to the SR. It seems to have the best display (I need readers to see my phone & 9PP) but Im hoping I can read the SR displays

@Oxhill_Runner yeah I know it costs something and this takes time, I did it because itās still a great watch, good looking and itās a pretty to throw itās away (and itās not sustainable!).
I still got a good old Ambit that does the job ! -
@Oxhill_Runner AMOLED is great, but you trade the Always On Display of the 9PP for it. If you can live with the shorter battery life in Smartwatch mode, Raise to wake and donāt plan to mount it on your bike - go for it!
Suunto Race S is smaller, but still bigger than 9PP and cheaper.
But as Brad said, the 9PP is still a great watch and one of the last made in finland. If you repair it you can sell it and someone else will be happy with the watch
