Screen on constantly out of water

The Steel works fine in water, I have had it for about 7-8 years. Most recent software (3.0.1497). I can change the backlight times. However out of water the screen stays on until the battery is flat. So every day I am having to charge the Steel for use. I have not noticed this before, could it be the battery is well used and not holding charge (not sure it is) or some other problem? Anyone with similar issues and fixes? Thanks
