Ambit3Peak not receiving routes from gpx files via App
-
Hi everyone,
I’ve been a Suunto user for 10 years but never joined this Forum!
I have an Ambit 3 Peak and up to now it’s been ok. I don’t mind the simple breadcrumb trail navigation and love it’s clear easy to read face. It was even better when there was Movescount but since moving to the App and SuuntoLink, I’ve been less happy.
Today I needed to upload a gpx file for a race in less than 2 weeks time. Set Use in Watch on the App. Connect to Suunto Link (with a Suunto cable) and no routes appears!
The watch transfers my exercises no problem.
I’m using an Android phone which is a version 12.
I need this navigation for my race.
Am I to understand that it could be the Ambit series are no longer included in systems upgrade? Could this be why my routes are not transferring to my watch?
Your help and advice would be very much appreciated. -
@SirBolty Hi, did you check the "Use in watch’ switch in the app for the route? Thats necessary to be synced
Edit: Sorry, just read you did… it works on my Ambit3 Vertical, so in general it should work -
@SirBolty odd, no issues here
-
@SirBolty Were you able to sync routes to your Ambit before, or has it ever worked for any route? SuuntoLink should still sync routes to Ambit, I don’t know why it doesn’t work for you. Are you using the same Suunto account in Android app and in SuuntoLink?
You could try to sync your watch with SuuntoLink, click “Send logs to Suunto” in SuuntoLink, and then send email of your Suunto account to me as a private message. We can then check the logs to see if there’s any more information.

Many thanks for the reply. It’s always worked fine until a few days ago. I did the latest version update and no routes loaded. My friend has a Suunto 5 and they load onto hers ok. Have updated, paired, unpaired, you namit, I’ve done it and no routes loading. Even tried splitting the GPx file to make it smaller.
Will do as you suggest and send logs to Suunto.
I’ve been using Suunto for 10 years, Ambit 3 Sport then the Peak. I like the simplicity and happy with a breadcrumb trail but lost (literally) without it!
Will be in touch and thanks for your help,

Me again!
I have sent logs to Suunto and have a case ID number. How do I go ahead from here?
Many thanks,
Gerry @SirBolty -
@SirBolty Please send the SuuntoLink log ID to me and I will check the logs. Email isn’t necessary when logs are sent from SuuntoLink, I’m sorry about the incorrect instructions.
When you say “I did the latest version update and no routes loaded”, do you mean it started after latest Suunto app Android update?
Suunto 5 route sync is different, routes are synced to S5 from Suunto mobile app (over Bluetooth), but to Ambit they are synced from SuuntoLink (over USB). You edit routes in Suunto mobile app, it syncs routes to cloud, and SuuntoLink syncs routes from cloud to Ambit.

@Raimo-Järvi ,
Thanks for coming back. The ID is
2507585674950300
I updated the watch via SuuntoLink using the USB just before the problems arose. I tried different Suunto USB cables.
I hope you can help.
Many thanks. -
@SirBolty Thank you for the logs. Looks like your route is not synced to watch, because number of waypoints in the route exceeds the maximum number of waypoints in Ambit. Maximum number of total waypoints (in all routes) in Ambit is 100, and according to the log your route has more than 900. You would have to somehow remove the waypoints to sync the route to Ambit. Maybe you can remove waypoints from gpx file and add it again to Suunto app?

@Raimo-Järvi
Thanks for that.
Just tried an old route after deleting everything in downloads and in the App and it loads.
I have the big gpx race file, split into 3, going to try to load these on as 3 individual routes and see what happens!
I’ll come back to you.
many thanks. -
@Raimo-Järvi
Just tried the route, split into 3 and still too many waypoints, as you said, and it won’t load on.
It loads (in 3 parts) onto my friends Suunto 5, does her watch have a better memory or more space than my Ambit3?
I have no idea how to reduce waypoints on the route! -
@SirBolty Does your GPX file contain waypoints, track, or both? If it has both, you could remove
wpt
part from it, see for example https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GPX. If your file only has waypoints, then it’s probably not possible to sync it to an Ambit without some conversion (unless you split it to very small pieces).Suunto 5 and Ambit3 are technically very different when it comes to routes (and most other things as well), I don’t remember the limitations in S5, but it’s definitely different.

@SirBolty theoretically, waypoints can also be removed/reduced using the Suunto App. After choosing to edit the route waypoints are shown in SA as seen in the screenshot below. E.g. turn-by-turn navigation uses waypoints. By tapping on a point and choosing ‘delete’ you can remove them. However, if you have many that may be lots of work

@wurzlsepp Thank you, good point. I think turn-by-turn waypoints are ignored in Ambit, because it doesn’t support them. So probably there are some other type of waypoints (that can be deleted in Suunto app as you said).
