Awful GPS during snowboarding
-
Not from snowboarding, but awful as well, I thought it’s average Race’s GPS performance -
@zen_pavel Just a random thought but did you wear the watch under thermally insulating outer layers that might have a metallic component to the insulation?
And which GPS mode was the Race setup for - were you using gps+glonass, gps+galileo or default gps? It looks like you were in southern Moscow so Glonass would give you the best positioning.
-
@far-blue How do you even change whether you’ll be using GPS only or additionally Galileo/Glonass? I can’t find it on my Race
-
@zen_pavel There are a couple of issues that may cause this.
- Do you have a current AGPS file in the watch? Check under Settings/General/About and see what the date is on the Assisted GPS file.
- For some reason GPS did not lock when you started. Was the GPS icon on the watch flashing or green?
-
@Brad_Olwin thanks for your reply!
- This file was current during yesterday’s workout (same issues with GPS). Can I manually update it before workout to be sure?
- I’ve missed that during the first workout, but the second started with a green GPS icon for sure as well as before yesterday’s one.
@far-blue I’ve tried different options. It was on my wrist during the first workout (under a fleece pullover and a snowboard jacket) and in the pocket of the same jacket during the second run. No metal components inside and no difference here.
I think the Race uses all available satellites regardless of their type in Performance mode.Few more observations from yesterday’s run:
- It usually takes about 5 minutes to get signal, which is pretty much in my opinion (about 10 seconds on my wife’s Apple watch);
- The Race loses it’s positioning in the middle of the run with no obvious reasons, and it takes few minutes to catch satellites again. The watch registers random positions in the middle of this process with enormous offset;
- The Race loses signal immediately when I’m in a café and then repeats it’s long process of catching satellites.
-
@zen_pavel 5 mins to get signal means there is something wrong.
check settings -> general -> about -> AGPS -> does it have a time / data? If not sync with the app and check again.
Additionally just reboot the device and check this value after a sync
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos AGPS is current.
But thanks for the advice. Will give it a try before next workout. -

I had similar experiences with my Vertical (long GPS lock times with updated AGPS, significant offset tracks, etc) and had logs submitted by the fine folks here a few weeks back. Honestly, I returned the first Vertical and bought a new one and there is no such issue with the new device.

@stromdiddily I think @zen_pavel may be hardware too but just to check. I remember yours, was not acting normal.

@Brad_Olwin is it ok for AGPS file to look like 2023-12-12T00:00:00Z. Is it updates only once a day? Can this time be different from 00:00Z?
-
@zen_pavel typically it wont be , but its ok to be
