First week of use.... and first OS crash - List of feelings (ugly / bad / awesome)
-
Sharing my feedback after one week of use of Suunto Race as runner (120km), wore it all day/night long and first OS crash this morning.
Starting with the ugly:
- Watch crash this morning after 2km of run. I don’t have anything special in mind that could have make the OS crash. The screen went black with no reaction on any button. After some time I saw an error code displayed and then a green bar - something like restoring to a previous working state. After the restore, it seemed to me that some parameters were the one I configured but most of them were back to default. However I did not have to reconfigure the phone association (Android). In the phone app, the history is preserved for Sleep, HR, HRV, etc. but in the watch it’s lost. Expectations/Area of improvement: After sync with the app, I would expect the watch to be able to restore all parameters and history, even after a hard reset (which I am not even sure was the case).
And now the bad/ok (could be improved / feature request):
-
Synchro with the Android app - would expect to be able to edit the settings available in the phone app (incl. notifications, sport profiles, widgets) immediately (instead of waiting 10’s of seconds) and why not automatically sync with the phone (e.g. the itineraries) every hour or so instead of manual sync (not sure if it is done or not)
-
Map & Navigation - I’d like to have a view with the map + a few informations (e.g. when doing interval training while following an itinerary) - could be the map + 1-2 metrics in HR/pace/time-in-interval/distance-in-interval - I was not able to find this possibility in the custom sport profiles
-
Map & Navigation - when importing a GPX (e.g. from Komoot) in the Suunto phone app (Android), I am able to sync with the watch but without the navigation instructions ; I am only able to get the navigation instructions for itineraries created directly in the Suunto app
-
Map - the limit of 500m max - I’d appreciate being able to zoom out much more with much lower details in order to check a direction or the overall track (w/ cities names or important summits/POIs)
-
Media Control - when listening to podcasts, most applications allow for previous / next / -x seconds / + x seconds - I think that any Bluetooth remote controllers are always mapped to 2 of those only (previous/next for music vs -/+ x seconds for podcasts) - wondering if this is a Bluetooth limit or if the media controller from Suunto could include the 4 controls
I am skipping the good/great - please consider anything not listed as working very well for me
And the awesome:
-
Battery - After a week of day/night use + 12+ hours of sport with always on screen and map navigation, I still have 37% of battery - this is completely awesome to me!
-
Display - no bright sun light trainings yet but until now, I found the display super great - beautiful colors, quite bright and pretty easy to follow an itinerary

Now after two additional weeks of use, I faced like many of us the “no-map” / “black-grid” issue.
I tried everything to get rid of this, including soft reset and deleting the maps but despite all my efforts, I cannot remove all the downloaded maps.
It seems last option available would be hard-reset which would mean losing all the parameters AGAIN. Two hard-reset in less than a month is a lot, even for a new watch. Hope it can get more reliable in the future.

@sigmart The no maps issue is likely location dependent and resets won’t help. Please report here as asked. https://forum.suunto.com/topic/9741/black-grid-issue/9

@Brad_Olwin thank you - not sure this is the same issue as I faced the issue both for the Picardie/France and Île-de-France/France maps. I reached out to support through the chat but did not get confirmation a cas has been opened.
After hard reset and download of the Île-de-France/France map, I was able to navigate the map.
However, on a 60km/6hours trails, I faced two reboots:
- first reboot after ~15km
- second reboot after an additional ~42km
After each reboot, I had to manually restart the activity and of course I have 3 activities logged instead of one…
Happy to help debug

@sigmart You should not have reboots, period! Next time a reboot happens send logs to Suunto as soon as you can. PM me and tell the time and date your logs were sent as well as your email username for logging into SA, no password, just email for your account. Also a brief description of what happened, I will send a bug report to Suunto. I assume you are on the updated OS?
