Swimming style not recognised

How does SR recognize your swimming style? I just found out that after swimming freestyle and breaststroke(mostly in favour of breaststroke), all the pool lengths were recorded as freestyle.
I’m on the latest fw and don’t have any comparison with previous versions as it was my very first activity.
-
@vjakub I didn’t know there was such a function for recognising swimming styles. For now I’m struggling with the answer to the question of what to do to make SR or SV (similar if not the same UI) count swum laps well.

@vjakub
This is usually done via accelerometer and potentially gyroscope if the watch uses it i.e. via arm movement.
Breaststroke should always be an easy detect due to its unique arm movement - but quite a lot of people use the old style - especially if swimming very slowly and this may not be coded in with the more modern stroke style (I say modern but its about +20/30 years old now).
Butterfuly shouldn’t be too difficult either as its more straight arm and has a curve to it.
Backstroke and Freestyle should be the more difficult ones to detect as very similar - and watch has to workout its upside down - but again should be reasonably easy.Issue normally comes with sloppy style, breaks mid lap etc.

@Ars-Vitae
I would think they would be running very similar if not the same algorithms. Most watches within a brand do.
The biggest issue around lap counts tends to around the detection of when you have touched (end of lap) and your push off (start of lap) - swim speed and then issues like breaking in middle of lap whether its style or stopping due to slower swimmers. Generallly a really good push off - whether turn and push or whether tumbleturn is required for the watch to use that accelerometer/gyroscope info to demarcate a lap. -

I’ve looked at my results in the Suunto App and, apart from the lap counting errors I mentioned in another post, style recognition is a total failure. But as I didn’t expect this function to exist at all, I’m not relying on it being effective. Nevertheless, a nice try by Suunto, sets some direction for the future. Laps counting, on the other hand, definitely should be improved.

@Ars-Vitae I was actually quite nicely surprise with counting swim laps accuracy. I didn’t have that experience with Epix2. I hope I didn’t jinx it
How are you satisfied with white digits on the black background? To me it’s not so easy to read under water when you’re swimming
-
@vjakub All recent Suunto watches have been struggling detecting the swimming style right for me.
I think I do have a rather good breast and freestyle stroke, but the watch obviously thinks differently.
This has been a pain for quite some time… -
@vjakub It all depends on which parts of your swim training (in the pool, of course) you do. In my case, the crawl counted well, but left out other styles and didn’t take into account the turns in other exercises. That’s why I asked in another post how exactly this counting algorithm works.
I have no problems with seeing the watch face, I set the normal backlight directly in the exercise. On a day-to-day basis I set the backlight light. I can see well even with darkened glasses. -

But indeed, I wonder if it is possible to set a white background, as in the selection of the watch face, also for exercise.

@Ars-Vitae Race has no white background - neither in the watch faces nor in activity.
Every lit pixel is drawing current with OLED displays. This is different for MIP displays like in the other models. -
@Jamie-BG
I am having difficulties too! All my breaststroke sessions are logged es freestyle.
I do move my arms not so far outside, but more downside so maybe this is an issue? But still it is a completely different move than freestyle. -
@Ecki-D Suunto does not recognize any swim strokes other than free style unfortunately. Don’t think swim activities are a priority for suunto as this has been well feedback for many years now.
