Screen won't sleep/always on in trail run or hike modes

My screen will not shut off on trail run mode or hike mode and of course both are when I need the longest battery life. Is there a setting that needs to be changed? It did not do this for almost two years and all of the sudden it’s doing this. I’ve put in “theatre mode” manually but would prefer it work correctly.
