Steps not matching with miles
-
Anyone know why my steps aren’t calculating correctly when I do a walk? Gps calculates a .5 mile but steps are only 300s? Definitely not right

Hi Teri, welcome to the forum. From memory if I recall correctly from reading the same kind of post a while back the algorithm for counting steps on the S9 series is not as accurate as the 3, 5 or 7 series. This is because the S9B, S9P and S9PP were designed with athletes in mind, therefore in general they’re probably not going to be too concerned with tracking their steps
The 3, 5 and 7 series are designed more for lifestyle, everyday wear etc and I believe their step counting and some of the other daily metrics are more accurate. I think Suunto is aware but there could be hardware limitations with regards to fixing it

It depends, if it only occured once, then forget it, if it comes back often, contact Suunto support

@Teri-Palmer step counting is based on some periodical watch movement.
It can work under the condition that the watch is worn on the wrist (or on the ankle), and that this wrist is moving freely while running or walking.
If you put the watch somewhere else or place your hand with the watch in your pocket, it will not register steps correctly.
We also had the case that someone with a partly paralysed arm got her steps not counted correctly… -
My experience is the S9PP is fairly accurate compared to the S9P. I had the S9P for a few months last summer and it had quite a few issues (resetting itself randomly was one), so I returned it as it was a demo anyhow from a local outdoor gear store. I remembered going for long runs and it wasn’t accurate at all and was told something similar from Suunto. Fast forward to now I have the S9PP is it seems perfectly accurate - I had a Coros Vertix 2 inbetween and it certainly matches what that device would show, and if I run 10K it shows my 10K worth of steps. My S9P after 10K would show like 2200 steps.

@mikekoski490 Vertix 2 no good experience that you sold it?

@Ultrawalker Hi. You are correct, the Vertix 2 experience for me wasn’t that great. Battery life and GPS were fine, but a bunch of things I didn’t like piled up to me selling it after 2 months, and I just didn’t like how Coros executes the UI and graphics. Totally personal too but I just found everything a little bit cartoonish.
