April Transition Update



  • I am having a Suunto 9 and sync it with Suunto App and with the cable to movescount. This handling is really, really clumsy.
    Well basically I only use the app for syncing the move with strava. As long as the Suunto App lacks nearly all analysing features such as Calender, Filtering, Tags, Personal Best, Graphs etc its not even worth thinking about using it as only/primary service.

    Please Suunto, please provide something Web-based which is at least as functional as movescount. If you take down movescount next year without proper replacement, I will be really mad about that and will regret investing in a 600€ watch!

    @yajjyay It’s the same for me. I only use the app for Strava sync and fast overlook but for detailed analysis, statistics,… I only use Movescount. At the moment i don’t see an appropriate functionality at the suunto app

    doesn’t the Strava upload work for you guys from Movescount?
    I’ve got the watch connected to the good old Movescount Android App and when I sync the watch to the Movescount App it appears in Strava within few minutes.
    I set this connection between MC and Strava up couple of months back and it still seems to work.



  • @Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos OK, that’s not something I had considered. My point is that we probably have logins for My Suunto, Movescount etc - why can’t these all be unified to a single account/login? Disparate logins/services just confuse the customer. One app, one platform, all going by the same name. Simplicity for the user.

  • @TELE-HO yes it does indeed used it this way before. I got my problems with the movescount app considering syncing and notifications. This works really fine with the suunto app so I use it for syncing. I connect the watch to the PC for chargeing and then sync with movescount



  • I have been using the mobile app with Spartan Ultra for a while but got into problems when I wanted to export and import GPX files and prepare routes for a relay race. I found no way to do it other than switching back to Movescount. I was really shocked learning there is no and probably won’t be any equivalent web application.

    I don’t really understand this way of “development”. I thought Suunto was popular among serious athletes, people who value durability more than features like music and mobile payments. Now Suunto will be loosing these customers because they plan to replace a not-so-great but functional web application with dumbed-down “modern” mobile app. This might apeal to a few people who want “fitness lifestyle” watches with easy mobile app and don’t need advanced features, but I think Garmin is already a few years ahead of Suunto in this segment.

    I will buy Garmin, if there is no replacement for Movescount next year. I want my gear to work for me, not wasting my time trying to make it work or waiting for updates.

    I absolutely agree with you!!
    I bought my Ambit3 as it is a real multisport watch with functionality for mountain sports, too. AND because of the customizable Ambit Apps. This is the watch I need! I don’t need another toy to put it on my wrist.

    I hesitate going back to Garmin since these are toys, too… BUT their Connect App and web interface is way ahead of Suunto App and Sports Tracker.

    I hope Suunto is hitting the accelerator and comes up with a useful App and web page to also support the Ambit family.

    @Spree Correct - 6 years is the limit for claim; there’s a distinctly grey area as to how long the product should last (with the term ‘reasonable’ being in there) - it would be my assertion that it would be ‘reasonable’ that the software should last as long as the hardware (with an upper limit of 6 years on any claim).

    Well I’m not sure what the difference is to be honest. I use “customer service” as an umbrella term to cover a company’s interaction with its customers. It’s the lack of communication and lack of clarity from Suunto that has been frustrating, as well as the lack of proposed timeline of this switch. Bigger than that it’s the lack of faith in a product and brand that I have invested money in.

    If you are considering “customer care” to be things like repairing watches, then I can’t really speak to that as my two Ambit 3s have always worked fine and I have not needed any repairs.

    Thanks again for taking and relaying data, it’s been the one positive link in the whole communication team so far.



  • I for one do not want, even need, the forthcoming Suunto App. I use Movescount on my desk top and have no SmartPhone. I do not use my iPad for this type of thing. The possibility that Movescount may disappear is more than disappointing, it would be a disaster for me. Although I recognise some inadequacies, I can live with them.
    Please don’t let Movescount die until the Suunto App works with desktop computers.

    I agree with all these points.
    My Spartan Sport HR is barely 4 months old but has been very heavily used to analise my MTB, off-piste skiing, ski touring and walking outings.
    Analysis of these activities on a big screen is a pleasure.
    I don’t have a smart phone and am not about to use my tablet in this way. I need that desk-top facility. Don’t let it die.



  • Do you plan to publish or suggest any software, let me download data from my Ambit 1 and upload it to some other services like Strava? Ambit 1 was the best Heavy Duty watch I ever had. I took aprt in many OCR races with it, I even fall down from a rock when climbing and got some minor scratches on it. Last year I’d bought Spartan Sport and when I did crawls on the sand I did so many awful scratches on it… it’s not a watch for OCRs, climbing and many other outdoor activities like that… I don’t know why such sport modes were implemented in it…

    Therefore I would like to still use my ambit 1 and have possibility to download recordings from it.

Suunto, please give me the ability to make routes and waypoints through a web interface on a computer rather than only through an interface on a phone. Planning major backcountry routes through a tiny interface without easy access to online maps and other sources prior to trips will drive me away. Thank you.

    You can do this already!!! I don’t understand what is preventing you from drawing a route on any web page that supports GPX export. Then import into SA. This is how I do it. What is missing are waypoints and we do need them.



  • What is missing is this exactly. Plan your routes on ANY website.
    Whereas before we had the known MC quality (for better or for worse), now I have to figure out which website has or has not got the same features as MC, register an account, learn the quirks etc.

    Suunto took something that just worked and made it more difficult.

    I recently tried to create a route of 1,5K on a website that was mentioned in the third party tools thread. Long story short, thank God for MC’s snap to existing road feature or I would be still lost.
    Anyway, we will adapt even unwillingly

    Out of curiosity, which one ?
    I’ve used different websites (gpsies, komoot, gaia) and even basecamp 😄 but I didn’t face particular issues.

    Personally speaking, the snap to existing road feature is why I can’t use MC for mapping routes. There’s loads of trails it doesn’t recognise that I know are there, so going from point A to B along a trail can’t be done, MC has me going miles around instead! Never used it because of this.

    MC is overrated.

    @Yannis-Belouris ANY website may not work but every single one I have tried works and all of them snap to roads and trails.



  • @Brad_Olwin I used openrunner. Probably tried for half an hour. Did not find a way to snap to roads, maybe there was but I was in a hurry.
    And to make my point clear, openrunner may be better than MC but please think of the average user.
    They need to know of openrunner (is it good for trails in Greece? Who knows…, then create a new account, learn how to use the website, export gpx, import to suunto watch.
    Which of the above steps is not an added step that was not needed before?

    Not to mention that currently I can prepare a route and upload it to friends movescount accounts (I have their login info) without them having to do anything.
    Let’s try to think about the average user here

    All this defense because of no web interface…

    The S9 limited ed. RedBull will be shipped the 23.
    Perhaps the next firmware come with it?

    Or at the same time of the Sunnto 5 will be released.
