Parallel Use Of Movescount + Suunto app
-
I’m using MC on PC through Suunto link just so I can use maps to create or use other users routes. I’m not using MC app on phone. If SA adds feature to import routes or use other available routes I probably wouldn’t use Movescount at all.
Did you have any crashes?
Not really, SA crashed maybe a couple of times, but that’s insignificant.Did you get any confusions about what SportModes come from Movescount and what from the Suunto app?
I just tried SportModes customization in SA beta, but I had to reset watch because of Routs import from MC webDid you get messed regarding the route sync?
Yup, I tried feature in beta, but had to factory reset S9 just so I can do route sync from MC webHow would you feel if you could use both apps?
I would switch to SA and forget about MC the moment it adds just a couple of features that I miss. Really like the SA, it would be great if the development was faster. -
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos Yes, you are right about GPX. Totally forgot it was kind of stripped down and more navigation centric. I suppose if push comes to shovel, I’d go with Strava and hope for the best.

Hi there great community here!
I NEED you help and experience.
As you know once you use the “new” features of the Suunto app such as sport mode customization and route sync you get disconnected from Movescount (You have a message+button consent).
However, I know that a lot of use do still use both apps in parallel. That is done by syncing first with the Movescount app (even if you have disconnected as said above) and then with the Suunto app.
That kinda goes against the rules but that is ok. We are all doing this including me.
The reason of this post is to know and collect your experience when you do that.

- Did you get messed regarding the route sync?
- How would you feel if you could use both apps? (Provided that Suunto app has Strava, Training peaks, Endomondo, GPX import, Heatmaps for all and new sharing options)
P.S. The reason behind this is to be able to perhaps lift this “restriction” as it has costed a lot of trouble, so I really need your feedback ideas and so on.
Thanks a lot and please focus on the subject. No structured intervals posts please

No crashes
-
If I customize Sportmodes in SA they are replaced by MC sport modes and lost from SA. MC sport modes dominate
-
Routes from MC and SA appear present
-
Once Training Peaks is implemented I will quit using MC app but…I would like planned moves to come to SA as I use this feature.
-
We need GPX import into SA…this is critical!
If the web MC had upload capabilities it would make it easier as some of us like to keep data in MC.
My experience is iOS only.

I was waiting for a post like this for a long time. Thank you very much @ Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos
I used MC and SA at the same time. The truth is that I reviewed data in MC and others in SA. They were a little complicated but I managed.
Accept the new functions to be able to use SA to see how I could work with it alone and hoping that from that moment the updates of SA would be faster and that they would be adding the functionality that if there was in MC.
Did you have any crashes?
Not the truth is that SA has been stable for a long time and works well.Did you get any confusions about what SportModes come from Movescount and what from the Suunto app?
Not all right. Just point out that I would like to have some more screen like the graphic cardiac frequency, but it is not the post.Did you get messed about the route sync?
Yes, I did it and it works well. But it is very complicated to make a route in the phone (on touch when you make manual entries), and does not allow to add routes through GPXHow would you feel if you could use both apps?
If you add to SA all that you indicate MC should be lost little by little. Only totals, statistics or values such as VO2 would be missing.I would appreciate a Web access enough to be more comfortable working with SA.
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos thank you for listening to us. I know that we make it complicated because we all want more and faster and in IT this is very difficult.

Hi there, Dimitrios!
Thanks for running this poll. Find my answers below.
- Did you have any crashes?
Yes, but only when I have one of the apps running and I launch the other one. As soon a the newly launched app tries to connect to my Spartan Sport WHR Baro the watch crashes and “soft resets” (the screen goes blank and almost immediately starts again with lost location -i.e. it does not show time of sunset, etc.-, but everything else is not lost, such as moves’ log).
The crash is 100% reproducible. If that matters, I am not using beta, but regular available-to-all iPhone build.
- Did you get any confusions about what SportModes come from Movescount and what from the Suunto app?
Other than above, no other problems that I have identified as such.
- Did you get messed regarding the route sync?
I saved a few routes with SA’s route editor and marked them for upload to the watch, while I also kept a few of them in Movescount, also marked as usable by the watch. That was back around July 2018 and both syncs worked ok.
Then I read here on the forum that syncing with SA disabled route sync with Movescount, but I am not sure if that was in force only recently. So, given that I ended with all the routes in the watch (both MC’s and SA’s) I am not sure if I used “parallel syncing” before the restriction came into force…
Regarding routes, I like the SA new route editor but for me using MC and its web interface is the key value-added feature of my specific Suunto watch (maybe this service was never considered for Suunto 3, but it was for my watch when I bought it and is an integral part of the “features I bought” with the watch -yeah, I know probably the terms of use of MC don’t say so, but that is my consumer point of view-), so I don’t like the restriction.
- How would you feel if you could use both apps? (Provided that Suunto app has Strava, Training peaks, Endomondo, GPX import, Heatmaps for all and new sharing options)
I understand you are also referring to syncing with Stryd, which I use. So I will just asume that it will sync at some time in the future in my answer below.
I would like using both apps, given that SA gets some additional features MC lacks (sleep tracking mainly). But these extra features are not key to me and, if I have to choose, I would exclusively go for the MC ecosystem.
Notwithstanding the above, should SA automatically upload moves to the MC backend, then I would be happy just using SA, as the MC app alone does not offer any value to me -I would still be able to use the outstanding MC web service-.
If you need some clarification on the above, please, just let me know.
Kind regards,
José

…Here is my answer to your question from this morning:
I read a lot of crashes here in the forum and that’s why I did not use MC as an app. I only used SA and pushed some workouts via RunGap to MC-Web.That’s certainly not much help for your specific questions. But at least a short information for you.
P.S. SA-Web would be great!
-
Sorry just SA installed on phone. MC Android app is totally useless for sync, so I use cable.
If SA could connect…ups sorry just use of 2 appsBR

First of all: thank you for this. You are doing a great job of managing this community.
Did you have any crashes?
No. The only trouble I had on LineageOS was, that I could not force the apps to stop without a third-party app, SdMaid in my case.
Did you get any confusions about what SportModes come from Movescount and what from the Suunto app?
I was confused by the warning message and did not try it out. From my perspective as a technical writer, Suunto makes the category mistake to project internal technical limitations onto the user.
Did you get messed regarding the route sync?
Yes.
How would you feel if you could use both apps? (Provided that Suunto app has Strava, Training peaks, Endomondo, GPX import, Heatmaps for all and new sharing options)
OK at best. To elaborate: I want a stable service that works well and provides all the old stuff (at minimum). An app solution on a mobile device definiatly is NOT sufficient for me. I want to be able to work on a big screen, with mouse/keyboard.
Above that: Stryd is missing on your list. As are training plans.

I do use both apps but I think SA might be way forward. Having said that, SA lacks the integration of Movescount which is key to setup of the watch and all that. Plus, it integrates with Strava and Training Peaks. I do feel it’s confusing for new, less seasoned Suunto users to have to use two apps because SA isn’t full-featured yet. -

Hi I know why on LineAge (I use lineage) and other android OS the apps cannot be force clsosed. It’s due to the notification acess so every new notification that comes will respawn the service. FYI

Hi,
I have both apps on my ios phone, but I only sync SA, movescount sync is done via cable and computer. MC app does not seem to connect to the watch though it tries sometimes (I had removed the watch prior to SA installation).
Anyway I must say I rarely use MC app because it’s ever poorer than SA in terms of displayed data. Movescount use is done on the big screen.Did you have any crashes?
Nope
Did you get any confusions about what SportModes come from Movescount and what from the Suunto app?
Not knowing where we’re headed to I have to admit I avoided breaking the movescount sync. Also I did not really understand to what extent the connexion would be broken : only app syncing, or would it also affect ability to sync via PC and cable ?
Did you get messed regarding the route sync?
I rarely use it and have so far only one route from movescount.
How would you feel if you could use both apps? (Provided that Suunto app has Strava, Training peaks, Endomondo, GPX import, Heatmaps for all and new sharing options)
Well, I don’t really wan’t to be able to use both apps, and for the use it gets, I could already uninstall MC app from my phone.
What I could not do at the moment is avoid using movescount on the web, as lots of data can only be viewed there, and while there’s no SA web platform, I need to be able to access my data on movescount web (SA to movescount sync would do the trick until we get a unified solution) -
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos
✓iOS user.➢As inconvenient I’ve experienced watch restarts.
➢Other, when I open the app’s in the wrong order thats f**** up some moves since I could only synchronize it with SA. I have solved by RunGap, but losing some data.
➢Suunto could remove this restriction whenever it does not affect the stability of two ecosystems and device performance. MS is so mature that it would be a shame to discard it. For me it´s very important create, edit and synchronize routes via MC web. For this reason at the moment I can´t use 100% SA. Pity, because I like the SA evolution. -
Hi,
I use both applications because use strava and SportModes with Movescount , when we have the same specs to Suunto App I remove the movescount definitive.
No Crashes of Suunto App , only the issues that fixes these week and I supouse that the IOS and Android the idea is give the same specs and values. Example in Android I view routes of other people and you can to import for your watch, with IOS we not view these spec. And I use movescout to planning my trainnings for diferents races.
Thanks

Pity, because I like the SA evolution.☛Last is my strongest argument for several reasons:
- SA has very low map resolution for creation routes on free mode.
- Free mode does not show route ascend / descent.
- There is no altimetry profile.
- There is no WP, POi option.
- There is no route preview.
-
NOTE: SA=Suunto App, ST=SportsTracker, MCa=MovesCount App, MCw=MovesCount Web, SL=SuuntoLink.
First: I’ve got a Samsung Galaxy S8 (Android 9.0). I’ve installed SA, ST and MCa on it. But just sync through MCa which sends data to MCw and then, MCw syncs data to Strava, STw and SA. So I manage routes, custom sport modes and every configuration on MCw. Oh! I forgot that sometimes I sync my watch to STw through SL.
But anyway, I work hard with SA and check every thing I could (of course: no routes, no custom sports and no watch settings): stats, analysis, training maps…
Now, my answers to your questions:
Did you have any crashes? No.
Did you get any confusions about what SportModes come from Movescount and what from the Suuunto App? This doesn’t apply to me, as I don’t sync with SA.
Did you get messed regarding the route sync? Same answer than before.
How would you feel if you could use both apps? For me, this needs a deeply answer:
IMHO, and to be honest, I just need a mobile app to sync and check basic things. I don’t need/want to program anything hard (routes, custom modes, settings…) in a portable device with 5-6 inches of max size. In any way. This means, at the same time, even that I don’t care about that, I doesn’t matter if the apps could do those things. Probably I will use those features just to test them but not seriously.
In my humble point of view, the best (and probably not so hard to do while every server belongs to Amer Sports) would be (if you let me give an idea) something like (try to figure it):
A bidirectional sync between MCw and ST databases (for workouts), so then, it will no matter if you sync your watch with MCa or SA and will maintain things in the right place no matter which app you use to sync. The only blockage Suunto must do is to link the watch to just one of the apps.
Probably it would be possible to sync routes between MCw and ST (this is just useful if SA sync routes with ST, I’m not sure about this).
For custom sport modes and watch settings, I don’t see it’s a need to make a database sync, as it would be easier to sync just between watch and the app the user wanna use.
Please, try to figure this setup. And remember that at this moment, MCa has got just a few features and is almost not usable for analysis, so it’s just for sync, check that workouts are uploaded and stop to count here. So with a situation like this, I would be really happy using just SA, as I don’t lose MCw features and multidevice working, and I will be calm, as I could back to MCa at any moment without loosing data. -

- Did you get any confusions about what SportModes come from Movescount and what from the Suunto app? I decided not to use sport modes from SA to avoid losing the connection with MC app, which I use merely to sync with Strava.
- Did you get messed regarding the route sync? Love the route feature in SA and didn’t get messed up when using it at the same time as MC route feature, but I haven’t used the one in SA recently, so can’t confirm if it would be different now.

I would not care about, and would not need, MC if SA had all those features implemented.

How would you feel if you could use both apps? I feel ok with this, because it’s already the case ;). But honestly, it’s annoying to sync with both apps, and i patiently expect the day where we will be able to manage all with only one service whatever the device. (Desktop or mobile) -

No.Did you get any confusions about what SportModes come from Movescount and what from the Suunto app?
I use The Spartan Trainer Whr _ the Sport mode are not customizable in the Android-Version 3.45.1 ?
Did you get messed regarding the route sync?
Yes I want to have All my routes in mc-web.
How would you feel if you could use both apps?
Tha would be fine for me.
I think it would be a great mistake from Suunto if the movescount Website would not be supported in the future.
Remember all great watch companies have Websites and apps for the watches! -
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos I rather use the more stylish Suunto app, but I really miss the ability to turn on/off certain notifications as you can do in MC app!
And of course sync directly from SA to Strava. A big miss so far… At least there should be a way, in the meantime while we wait for real-time sync to Strava, to get the activities from the watch to Strava when it’s locked to SA. -
Quick from me.
Im using MC and Suunto app. I have S9 and SSS whrB. Due to fact that once you started using Suunto app sport mode cust what disconnects you from MC - SSS is connected to SApp and S9 to MC.
Also Strava import is important for me -> MC.
As I wrote many times the biggest negative of SApp is that till now values are still diff from values in watch what is not acceptable for me.Anyway I didnt notice some issues with pairing or sync on Iphone 8 with latest iOS.
