New owner - Suunto Race - opinion
-
Hello everyone!
I hope that the forum is read by developers or moderators… who listen or at least answer .Race is my first sports watch, previously I used a MiBand. I would like to share some observations that occurred to me during the last month.
Overall, I like the watch, it’s ok, I don’t miss anything. It works well in frosty temperatures - water and in the gym, but I have objection about the UI.
- Why is it not possible to upload your own watchfaces? Suunto design store or community?
This is quite important due to the fact that watches have OLED screens and finding several dials with different colors, e.g. background colors, would allow for even pixel burning.
It’s a bit strange that there is no such option and I don’t see a problem since I can download maps that are, for example, 2 GB, so why no 100 MB watchface. I also heard that the ones added haven’t changed for a very long time… and in my opinion they are ekhem… ugly. I know its sport watch, but still.- Why is it not possible to rotate the UI by 180*?
I like to wear the watch on my left hand, but when I lift weights, the buttons dig into my hand, which causes pain and discomfort, and I also press various things during training. I would like to turn the watch - with the buttons facing towards the inside of my hand. Yes, I know, I can lock the screen, but then I can’t use the “Gym Timer” application - I have to unlock it again, start it, and so on, so on…
- No iPhone emoji or similar.
Come on, it’s 2024 - nice to have it .
-
When creating a “new category - different” of a sport in the watch and selecting applications, etc., it would be nice to be able to choose the “color of the sport” - which will be displayed in the application and so that it would not be displayed as “Other” in the application itself, but as a name that we chose for sport…
-
Optionally - the time left to fully charge the watch when it is on the charger.
Nice to have.
-
Suunto target users are serious .
They don’t use emojis

Hi @karmazynowycukiereczek, welcome on this forum ! Some developers and moderators are here. (I’m not).
Also don’t hesitate to use search function, it works quite fine and all the subjects you brought here have already been discussed.
Also you’ll sometimes have surveys on the Suunto App about last updates or wishes for improvement.- Why is it not possible to upload your own watchfaces? Suunto design store or community?
It is not possible for now, what you ask for exists on others brands like Garmin but not on Suunto’s. Asked by some/many users. Don’t know if it will come some day.
- Why is it not possible to rotate the UI by 180*?
There was a recent itw of a french Suunto Employee mentionning that some hardware components position makes it not possible.
- No iPhone emoji or similar.
Not available for now, may change…but as @zhang965 mentionned, we are a lot of suunto users here not very interested (joke mode on). (I personnaly really don’t care, I don’t use notification on my watch).

Agreed, also requested few times.

@karmazynowycukiereczek The post below from @zhang965 regarding emojis was not very helpful to you. You have answers already from @Tieutieu but to elaborate a bit, the development efforts are prioritized and tend to be more focused on exercise functions. I would like to see emojis enabled as well. We are getting some limited emojis so I have hope that this will come.
Rotation for left hand users has been requested many times, hopefully at some point this will occur, may require different hardware.
I doubt the watch faces will change, the development is not open for that. -

What? What hardwear? Why you need hardware? Just simple rotation option in settings, just like for example “flashlight”. I dont talk about auto-rotation.

They explain that somewhere?

I dont use it too, i just nice to have it.
For me now the biggest issue is - no rotation and “colors” in sport, then watchfaces. I didnt check that because I was sure it is in nowadays… as we can see - nope

Sad. Unfortunately, this means bad “degradation” of the OLED.

Just simple option in menu “Rotate UI”. I don’t need that to be automated.

.
Not true, the display only mode shifts pixels so that pixel burn in is at a minimum. Second, the display either turns oft or goes to minimum display, which shifts pixels when your wrist is down.
-
@karmazynowycukiereczek I don’t work at Suunto so can’t tell you the « why ».
Like everyone, me included, we often ask « why is it not done, it’s easy ».
Well, it’s probably not that simple. Also as @Brad_Olwin explained, it’s most of all a question of priorities and choices. Here you have the thread about the itw I mentioned, it could give you an idea of suunto policy and history, as you are new with the brand.

May the position of the baro sensor have something to do with that?

@Luis-Andés-Olmedo
or the GPS antenna, or …
lots of speculation
rotate the screen display might not be the problem in software side, but use the watch reverse to its designed orientation (meaning on each single wrist) might be.
I am neither at Suunto and just speculating with you -
@Mff73 @Luis-Andés-Olmedo look at the itw I linked. At 34:13 end 35:05 the explanation is given (english transcription)

Thank you! but it’s in French

I found a transcription here: https://forum.suunto.com/assets/uploads/files/1699523904136-s01e07-mp3-132a985a-5825t.pdf
The antenna seems to be the point. Makes sense

Not true, because I’m not talking about the option you added, but about the watchface - if you use one watch face, the same pixels always work, which causes uneven degradation of other pixels.
I emphasize once again - I’m not talking about the AOD function, because it is something else :)).@Tieutieu said in New owner - Suunto Race - opinion:

I am not saying its easy, i am working in IT, so i know there are task that need time, but they even listen community? Because from what I see, there are a lot of topics that people ask for but are not done and it’s starting to worry me.

What do u mean? Do you mean that all sensors under the watch working “upside down” will have a problem?
As I mentioned, I do NOT want it to be automatic rotation, only via the options in the menu.@Tieutieu said in New owner - Suunto Race - opinion:

I read the English version, which is added somewhere by a forum user. Unfortunately, I disagree with most of them.
They write that they are more “outdoor” than “sports”, that’s why they added skills such as: “golf”, “motosports”? Common guys :D.
Maybe adding all these little things would make them money to compete with Garmin (in an interview they said they were too small).Overall, I am satisfied with the watch - it works well outdoors
water, I will soon test it on a bike - I’m only worried about the gym. -

As I mentioned, I do NOT want it to be automatic rotation, only via the options in the menu.I meant exactly that, maybe the sensor being more exposed to wind could cause any issues. Anyway, in the link that @Tieutieu posted they explain that it may be due to the position of the GPS antenna for better reception…
Just guessing.

Good one. In Coros watches the position of the baro sensor is in the lateral of the watch so always remains in the same position although you rotate the watch.

@karmazynowycukiereczek I do not understand your comments or comments like yours sometimes. Do you understand how a private company works? They develop some products, taking technical/commercial decisions that will have limitations. Resources, all of them, are limited.
So, when you write “I am not saying its easy, i am working in IT, so i know there are task that need time, but they even listen community? Because from what I see, there are a lot of topics that people ask for but are not done and it’s starting to worry me.” I wonder, what worries you? That a private company doesn’t listen to you? (Sure they do) Or that you bought a watch that doesn’t do the things exactly as you like? Do you have some stocks in the company and you think that you are going to lose some money?
You have bought a product with functionalities that if it doesn’t suit you, you can return it. Suunto is adding functionalities with every update, I’m pretty sure that the roadmap for these new features was made some time ago. If you want new features you can request them directly to Suunto support or create/relaunch a feature request from this very forum which is read by Suunto workers.
BTW and regarding the screen of the Race, in some Telegram forum with Suunto workers, questions about the screen and more customization arise and the answer was that people at Suunto would like to have more customization but with that you’ll also add the risk of more burn in screens. So, probably, you will do a good use of more customization to the screen but what will the other users do? If you were Suunto what will you do knowing that resources are limited? Will you risk to have more replacements without a very good implementation of this customization? Will this effort cover its cost and generate revenue?

@jjpaz As someone said before the issue is with the GPS antenna
The S9B and Spartans have the baro sensor in the side and it also have its downsizes like pumping effect, even more if you wear the watch in the right arm and you block the sensor with your hand. That effect can be seen in COROS watches too, more easily than in Suunto ones too. A friend of mine switched from a S9BTi to a Coros Vertix 2 and in nearly all his runs he has a pumping effect that gives him more ascent, sometimes more than 60/80 m in a 10 km trail running with around 300 m ascent, you can see the spikes in the ascent graph.

@Brad_Olwin if memory serves me correctly this was the problem with Samsung galaxy watches. The aftermarket watch faces (ones not designed by Samsung) didn’t shift pixels properly and caused burn in on Amoled screens. They had a bunch of warranty claims of burned in screens within a year of ownership.
I dunno, I would much rather have a few watch faces than a burned screen.
