Suunto 9 - trail running not showing vert?
-
Hello! I am back with another probably dumb question. In the last few weeks when i pick trail running as my activity my watch face/display no longer shows vertical feet up/down anymore.
The amount of gain/descent being constantly on the watch face was very helpful as i am training for some big days in the mountains and i want to know when ive gone up or down a thousand feet or whatever.
The hiking display still shows this but the trail running activity does not. Just not sure what ive done or what has changed.
For the record once i stop and save an activity i can see up/down on the watch and on the Suunto app. But the watch display while in the middle of activity just doesnt show up/down anymore. What gives?

@moreusernameftw there are a few trail running profiles: basic, mountain, and power. Mountain is probably the one you used previously.
Other option would be to use suuntoplus climb to get some insight in your climbs/descents. Or you could create a custom profile.

@el2thek ok… so i have changed my profile somehow? I want the real time up/down to display on my watch asi am actively running up/down mountains/hills. Ill look for a way to update my profile. Thanks.

@moreusernameftw ah… so if i go to exercise --> trail run --> more options --> suunto plus features --> climb that seems to allow me to press through teh center button once the activity has started and see vert.
Very unintuitive! But i think this will work and will try it out on my long run tomorrow.

@moreusernameftw
hill climb will give you a short summary of your ups and downs once they end, it triggers an automatic lap. don’t forget to deactivate autolaps that appear every 1km, it will confuse you. -
@moreusernameftw no-no, it’s not that unintuitive as you might think:)
Some suunto plus features do show vertical meters and you can use that as a workaround. But they are not meant to simply provide you with elevation data, there are further ‘more complicated’ features that can be added to your workout.
If you like just plain old vertical meters, go ahead and create a custom sports mode in the suunto app. You do it once and forget. You’ll find a lot of interesting data fields that you can add to your trail running profile. Or you could remove the unnecessary ones. -
@DMytro Hello…i honestly had no idea i could make a custom sports mode in the app. I will look into it, thank you.
I guess the last firmware update changed the default display of trail running?
Im going for a long run this morning w/a lot of vert so i will see how this all goes.

@moreusernameftw said in Suunto 9 - trail running not showing vert?:

Exactly. Not sure about the reasons, but it’s what we have now:)
Hope you’ll like this additional functionality. I hike often and use a neat little field for the custom hiking mode: ‘how many km is left until the end of the route’ - it really helps to get a feel how much more time do I need to finish the route.

@DMytro Well i just got back from my weekly long trail run and thank you again for all your help. I really appreciate it.
I was able to customize gain/descent, distance, time, avg pace. Basically exactly what i want and nothing that i dont.
Thanks again for letting me know about this functionality. Ill be working w/it more in the future.
Cheers!

@moreusernameftw happy to help.

@DMytro I would assume the main reason is “Finland is flat”. There is a lot of trail running (i.e. running on trails as opposed to on road) that is entirely flat in Finland and many other countries in the world. For people in those countries, “trail running” does not automatically come with a stress on ascent/descent or mountainous trails/hills. It just means running on trails and not on concrete.
Therefore, there are 2 trail running modes:
- Basic, without ascent shown
- Mountaint, with ascent shown
